Wai Myint and Aung Thant have been in Fayetteville for two years. Originally from Myanmar, they have three children. Their oldest daughter, 22, has graduated college, and is in the US Army. Their middle daughter, 17, is in high school. Their son, 13, is in middle school. Wai and Aung moved to the US, “in hopes of a better life for our children. We were very glad to find a Burmese community here in Fayetteville along with the International community at the OLC.”

Meet Wai Myint

“Back in Myanmar, I used to work as a salesperson in a little shop in Bago. I used to sell clothes and other small fashion items. Now, I prepare salads at Chartwells at the University of Arkansas. That’s the reason I came to OLC. I wanted to improve my English because I have difficulties at work and I want to communicate better with my coworkers.

“In my free time, I like to sing and dance. I like singing Burmese songs, but when it comes to dancing, I really like hip hop and pop dances. For example, I really like Shakira. If I had a chance to travel anywhere in the world in the future, I really want to visit Myanmar and have the chance to travel to parts of the country I’ve never been to. Plus, it would be really nice to see my family again.”

“Back in Myanmar, I used to work as a Mechanic with a focus in fixing cars and motorbikes. Now, I drive an UBER for a living. That’s not my main goal though. I really want to get a certificate to try to continue working as a mechanic in the US. That’s why I’m here at OLC. I want to improve my English so that I can communicate better with my UBER clients. And in the future when I get a new job, I would be able to improve even more.

“In my free time, I like to repair things around the house. I really enjoy doing handyman work in my free time. If I had a chance to travel anywhere in the world in the future, I really want to visit South Korea and Japan. My childhood friends currently live in Japan and I want to see them again! My oldest daughter will be on duty in South Korea after training, so it would be really nice to visit there as well.”
