Meet Julia
Hi y’all! This is Julia from Spain. I came to Fayetteville almost 2 years ago. I have a PhD in Analytical Chemistry and I am an amateur photographer during my free time! I started to work in the Water Quality Control Lab at the University of Arkansas a few months ago. In the beginning, it was hard because I had to learn many new things and of course, in another language different to my native idiom. I’m in a constant learning curve which makes me feel proud of myself because I’m able to do more things than I believed.
Most of my lab-mates are from the US, so I only speak English in the Lab. I work with instruments, samples and chemicals so it is super important to understand them very well and have good English skill to help me grow in my job. Thanks to OLC I’m improving my English, and day by day I feel more confident in myself. Thanks to that I’m achieving (little by little) my goals here in the US.
Despite this I think that learning a new language is work itself, so I have to continue working hard every single day which is made possible by OLC classes and their Book Club. OLC gave me the chance to not only to learn English, but to be in a wonderful community of people where you always feel like you’re at home.
