2021 Champions of Literacy
2021 Champion of Literacy Recipient-
AR Representative Megan Godfrey
Representative Megan Godfrey of Springdale was our 2021 Champion of Literacy. Board Chair Molly Jensen said: “Godfrey has demonstrated a deep commitment to literacy and community. As an Arkansas House Representative, she works to provide opportunities for everyone in our community including bi-lingual and dual immersion programs in Arkansas schools. Godfrey also paved the way for DACA recipients to become licensed nurses which allows them to practice their profession in the state.”
The Champion of Literacy award was created to recognize an outstanding commitment to adult literacy by a Washington County community member and is presented as a memorial to one of Ozark Literacy Council’s greatest supporters and advocates, the late Barbara Broyles. The Champion of Literacy is someone who exemplifies Barbara Broyles’ commitment to service, compassion, and diversity in the field of adult literacy.
The Champion of Literacy is someone who uniquely demonstrates the power of literacy to improve lives and build communities and who, like Barbara Broyles, has made the promotion of literacy a priority in their professional and personal life. “This is an immense honor,” said Godfrey, “and one I accept with deep gratitude and humility.”
Representative Megan Godfrey is a second-term legislator in the Arkansas House of Representatives. Driven by her core values of compassion, equality, and inclusiveness, Rep. Godfrey represents her hometown of Springdale with a commitment to elevating all of the diverse voices of District 89. Her most significant legislative accomplishments include allowing DACA recipients to be licensed as nurses, permitting candidates to use campaign funds for campaign-related child care expenses, and allowing bilingual and dual immersion programs in Arkansas’ schools.
